communion

I've had the very same thoughts as the author of this post: "Rethinking the Lord's Supper"  

Wasn't it just a meal?

I agree that there shouldn't be division in the church. period. So it is sad that the detailed traditions associated with the Lord's Supper have caused division. To say it is just a meal however, is perhaps too flippant. By the time Paul wrote 1 Corinthians 11 this is already an important practice in the life of the church, and he adds some solemnity to it by means of judgments for being flippant with it.
Jesus said to do this in remembrance of him, quite clearly. To try to change it or spiritualize it away is what Jeroboam did in 1 Kings 12 when he set up new symbols for worship in the Northern Kingdom.
