fight club

I've never seen the movie or read the book.  Just thought I'd get that out of the way first.

For the last five years, nearly every Sunday evening that I've been in Rochester I've had the privilege of getting together with other Christian men and praying.  We call it Fight Club (and even have parodied rules).  More than any other regular event Fight Club has transformed my life.  There is nothing quite like sitting in a room for several hours with other men, all talking to our Heavenly Father.  Prayer connects people more powerfully than any other thing I've experienced.  And God uses it.  When we pray God uses our prayers to change us and the world around us.  We intercede for each other, our friends, our campus, our city, our world.  At Fight Club I know that I can pray about absolutely anything, with no fear of condemnation from my brothers.  And I know that they will pray for me when I can't pray anything at all.  I don't know that I've ever walked out after a Fight and not been encouraged.

Last Sunday was my final night at a regular Fight or a while.  Of course, I plan to go anytime I'm back in town.  But it was a particularly emotional night for me.  It was well-attended.  The Spirit was there if force, praying through us and teaching us.  There were even two first-timers at the last regular meeting of the year!  And then to sit in a small circle at the end with Slippey and Jon and Matt -- it's almost too much for me to write about.  The four of us have in some ways been Fight Club over the last few years.  And to pray for each other and be sent off by the prayers of the other guys -- what a blessing from God!

May those come after us quickly and greatly surpass anything we have appeared to achieve in Christ.
