a cat
i'd purr
and rub my face
on your waiting hand
a dog
i'd jump
big eyes bright and gleaming
and paws on your shoulders
i'd try to lick your face
undeterred when you push me away
wagging ever faster tail
thumping legs of chair and man and table
excited, unaware
a sparrow
i'd soar
and roll and dive and flip
and catch a branch
already singing
but i am
a man sometimes
and the phone against
my ear reminds
the drive, the time
these words are all i have to say
