multiplication

When are children supposed to learn multiplication tables?  I remember doing really simple algebra in 6th grade.

Some of the 5th grade students I'm tutoring are having trouble with basic multiplication in 5th grade.  There is injustice in our education system!  No fifth grade student should have to calculate 7*4 over the course of 30 seconds by adding 7+7+7+7 in his head and getting 29.

That is why I want to teach.  These kids aren't dumb!  They're bright.  They trade insults faster than I can think.  But they're all reading three grade levels behind.

O God, raise up men and women to care enough about the future of the children of our cities that they don't allow such low standards, that they don't set such low expectations.
